As summer has passed the mid-way mark for summer law students, I find myself looking back at the incredible journey I’ve embarked upon as a civil litigation summer law student at the Department of National Defence. These past two months have been nothing short of transformative, filled with valuable experiences and profound personal growth. 

From the very beginning, I knew that dedicating my summer to civil litigation was the right path for me. The complexity of legal disputes, the power of advocacy, and the potential to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives drew me in with an irresistible allure. As I reflect on my experiences, I can confidently say that I made the right choice. 

One of the most enriching aspects of my summer has been the exposure to real-world cases and the chance to work alongside seasoned attorneys. From conducting legal research, drafting memorandeums, and attending strategic meetings, everyday has been a learning adventure. Witnessing the intricate dance between legal theory and its practical application has deepened my understanding of the law’s dynamic nature. 

Moreover, the collaborative nature of the legal profession has truly amazed me. Working as part of a dedicated team of legal professionals has taught me the value of open communication, mutual support, and leveraging collective strengths. Witnessing the power of collaboration firsthand has not only enhanced my legal skills but also reminded me of the importance of building strong relationships within any professional setting.

This summer has also exposed me to the human aspect of civil litigation. Engaging with clients has reinforced my belief that the law is not just about the legal framework, but about serving individuals, fighting for justice, and helping them navigate through challenging times. 

As I look ahead, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. The lessons learned and the relationships forged during this summer will undoubtedly shape my future as a legal professional.
